Definition
Venous thrombosis (phlebitis) is defined as the formation of a blood clot in a vein, responsible for an obstruction of the blood flow at the level of this vein. The veins of the lower limbs are more concerned than the other veins of the rest of the body because blood stagnates more there and veins are more dilated, which encourages the occurrence of the thrombi (clot). The phlebitis of the lower limbs is a frequent pathology (about 250,000 cases per year in France for example) and is responsible for (about) 10,000 deaths/year by pulmonary embolism. The phlebitis of the lower limbs is a serious illness because of an acute complication, the pulmonary embolism. File last reviewed on dec 18, 2011 |
