THE TREATMENT

1 - Goal of the treatment of the generalized oedemas secondary to a retention of water and salt

The treatment aims at restricting the contribution of water and salt.

2 - Means

- Rest in bed;

- Restriction of water and salt with a contribution of sodium limited to 2-4 g/l,

- Diuretics.

3 - Indications

Rest in bed associated to the restriction of water and salt should be tried in a first stage.

Its inefficiency must induce the prescription of diuretics.

In case of a chronic, only renal insufficiency, “Henle” diuretics are allowed. One will add if needed the evacuating puncture of an effusion (of the lung or the stomach for example).

The indications of the renal haemodialysis (dialysis) are the acute renal insufficiency and the chronic renal insufficiency in case of an oedema of the organs.

4 - Surveillance

The weight evolution is the most reliable indicator of the regression of the oedemas.A surveillance of the quantity of urines emitted, of the sodium rate in blood and urines are necessary to judge the efficiency of the treatment, and to prevent the diuretics side effects.
