DEFINITION

The heart is constituted of 4 cavities: two auricles and two ventricles.

The mitral valve is localized between the left auricle and the left ventricle. Normally, blood goes from the left auricle toward the left ventricle.

A mitral insufficiency is defined as an abnormal reflux of blood from the left ventricle toward the left auricle when the left ventricle contracts. This illness corresponds to the mitral valve loss in impenetrability.

It is a relatively frequent cardiac illness, whose ultimate treatment rests on the replacement of the mitral valve when the mitral insufficiency is too important.
