DEFINITION

A loss of consciousness is defined as the subject’s suspension of his conscious relationships with the outside world, during a time generally lower than 3 minutes but beyond this interval of time the diagnosis of coma is made.

During a loss of consciousness, the subject continues to breathe, his heart beats but he is unconscious. A loss of consciousness is generally associated to a fall.

It is an extremely frequent symptom in the population, which can be dangerous according to circumstances (driving vehicles in particular) and poses the problem of its cause.
