DEFINITION

When the heart no longer functions normally, when it is no longer strong enough to eject blood, this situation is called a state of shock. As the heart is responsible for this state of shock, this illness is called “cardiogenic shock”.

This state of shock corresponds in fact to a cardiac insufficiency outbreak, in particular of left cardiac insufficiency.

It is a very serious illness, which must be treated quickly in a medical environment, preferably in a resuscitation department or intensive care of cardiology department.

The treatment calls on powerful drugs, administered by i.v.

The most frequent reason for a cardiogenic shock is the myocardial infarction, whose evolution it complicates in 5 to 10% of the cases and constitutes the main death cause in spite of the recent therapeutic progresses.

Deliberately, we chose to expose mainly the cardiogenic shock of the myocardial infarction, and to also describe the other causes.
