THE DOPPLER ULTRASOUND OF THE ARTERIES

- Functioning principles of the Doppler ultrasound

- Indications

The arteries are vessels bringing the blood from the heart to the organs.

Their exploration with the help of the Doppler ultrasound permits to analyse their structure and the blood flow present in the arteries.

It is a simple, completely painless exam, lasting 10 to 50 minutes according to the localization and the indication.

FUNCTIONING PRINCIPLES OF THE DOPPLER ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound and Doppler are based on the use of the ultrasounds.

An ultrasound is emitted by the ultrasound probe then it comes up against the level of the artery which sends back the ultrasound. This one will then be perceived by the probe which then transmits a picture.

As the speed of the ultrasounds is very high, it is possible to get several pictures per second (about 24) which permits to have mobile pictures of the artery.

The Doppler is also based on the same principle, and can function with colour (colour Doppler) or not (pulsed or continuous Doppler).

Thus, the Doppler permits to analyse the blood flow in the artery.
